AI adoption in Southeast Asia: statistics for 2026

Figures on how people and businesses in Southeast Asia use AI, with the source, the year and a link for each one. Every number was opened at its source and checked on 21 October 2026. Surveys count different things, so read the line under each figure before you compare two of them.

The headline figures

Region-wide

Two views of the region. One counts people who use generative AI. The other asks companies that already use AI how far along they are.

58%

of the working population in Southeast Asia's six largest economies now use generative AI. That is around 243 million people.

Internet users who said they used a standalone generative AI app or website in the last 30 days. Six economies: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Google and YouGov survey, July 2026, 9,006 AI users, with Bain analysis.

By country

The chart compares people, not companies. It shows the share of the working-age population (ages 15 to 64) that used a generative AI product in June 2026. Microsoft estimates it from its own usage data and adjusts for device share and internet access.

Share of people aged 15 to 64 who used generative AI, June 2026
  • Singapore64.3%
  • Vietnam27.9%
  • Malaysia22.6%
  • Philippines20.7%
  • Indonesia14.8%
  • Thailand13.4%
  • World18.8%

Microsoft's measure is an estimate drawn from its own usage data. It counts people who used a generative AI product, not companies that adopted AI.

Business adoption by country

These figures count businesses. Government and consultancy surveys use different definitions, so the Singapore figure and the others below are not directly comparable.

Government survey of enterprises of all sizes. Among enterprises with at least 10 employees the rate was 34.6%, against an OECD average of 20.3%.

Skills and workers

Use at work is ahead of training. The Singapore figures come from a government survey of workers. The Vietnam figure counts employees at businesses.

85.7%

of surveyed workers in Singapore reported using AI tools at work in 2026, up from 77.6% in 2025.

of surveyed workers in Singapore attended AI-related training in the past 12 months. More than two-thirds said they need to upskill or reskill in AI.

Same government survey of workers. The two most common reasons for not training were that the employer did not send them (34.9%) and a lack of time (34.1%).

What this means for agencies and service businesses

These are our readings of the figures above, not new data.

  • Use by people is ahead of use by companies. In Singapore, 85.7% of surveyed workers use AI at work, while 23.5% of enterprises have adopted it. The two surveys count different things, but the gap suggests many people use AI tools on their own, without a shared process behind them.
  • Getting past the pilot is the hard part. Among companies already using AI in the McKinsey survey, 8% say it is fully scaled and 19% are still experimenting. The barrier named most often is a lack of in-house expertise.
  • Training is behind. More than two-thirds of surveyed Singapore workers say they need to upskill or reskill in AI, but 36.7% had AI training in the past year. In Vietnam, 26% of employees had any digital training or upskilling in the past year.
  • Smaller firms are behind larger ones. Agencies and service businesses are usually small or mid-sized, so the SME figures are the ones to watch.
  • A practical start is one task your team repeats every week, a person who checks the output before it reaches a client, and a note of how long the task took before and after.

How we picked these figures

We looked for 2025 and 2026 figures from governments, international research firms and large surveys. We opened each source and copied the number and its definition as written.

Where a figure comes from research paid for by a company, the card says so. Several figures come from studies commissioned by Amazon Web Services and run by Strand Partners.

We left out figures we could not open at the source, and figures built on old data. For example, a Philippine government paper reports that 14.9% of firms use AI, but it draws on a 2021 survey.

Definitions differ between sources. A government count of enterprises, a consultancy survey of business leaders and a usage estimate from software data measure different things. Compare figures only inside the same source.
